The town sits at the northern foot of Dartmoor, with the East and West Okement rivers meeting close to the centre before the ground climbs straight up towards Yes Tor and High Willhays. That climb happens fast. Within a couple of miles of the last houses, a walker is on some of the highest, most exposed open ground in southern England, with few paths, no shelter, and long lines of sight that can close to almost nothing the moment the weather turns.

For a search team working on foot, that height and distance is the problem. Covering the ground between the two Okement valleys and the high tors by walking it takes hours, and every hour spent walking one line is an hour another line goes unchecked. A drone crossing the same ground does it as a series of overlapping passes, not a single slow sweep, so more of the open moor gets checked in the time a search has available.

Okehampton is one of the wettest and windiest towns in this part of Devon, because Dartmoor forces the prevailing Atlantic air straight upwards right on its southern edge. That means low cloud and driving rain arrive here first and linger longest, and a search that is straightforward at three hundred metres can be looking at near zero visibility not far above it. A person on the ground in that cloud has almost no ability to spot someone thirty metres away across open grass or bracken.

A drone flying below the cloud base keeps a working view of the ground even when a person standing on it cannot see their own boots clearly, and the thermal camera adds a second layer that does not depend on visibility at all, picking out a body's heat signature against cold, wet moorland regardless of how flat the light is or how hard the rain is falling.

Okehampton Castle marks the edge of town and the start of open country, and it works well as a fixed rendezvous point for briefing before a team moves onto the moor proper. Further out, Meldon Viaduct is a landmark that shows up clearly from the air and on the ground, useful for dividing a wider search area into sections that everyone involved can describe the same way.

Because Yes Tor and High Willhays are the two highest points on Dartmoor, they are also two of the most obvious places to start when someone has gone missing on high ground, whether that means checking the summits themselves or the long, featureless saddle of moor that runs between them and the town.
