Drone search and rescue cover in Bideford

Bideford sits across both banks of the Torridge, a former shipbuilding port where the old town climbs steeply from the quay on the east side while Northam and Appledore stretch out towards the estuary mouth on the other. That spread of ground, roughly two miles from the tightly packed streets above the quay to the open dunes and burrows near the coast, means a search here rarely covers one kind of terrain; it usually covers three or four in the same job.

The estuary itself is the trickiest part. Above Bideford Long Bridge the Torridge behaves like a river; below it, towards Appledore, it widens into tidal water with sandbanks and mudflats that shift with every tide. A search near the water has to account for how much ground is currently out of the water and how long it will stay that way, because a stretch of sandbank that is walkable at low tide can be gone within a couple of hours.

Out towards the mouth of the estuary, Northam Burrows opens into a wide flat of dunes and coastal grazing marsh, open ground with no walls or fence lines to break it up, but hard to search on foot because the ground undulates in low ridges and hollows that can hide a person or an animal from only a few metres away. Walking a grid across that kind of ground, checking every dip, takes a long time and a lot of people.

From above, the same ground is straightforward to cover fast. A wide, flat area like the Burrows is close to ideal for the visual camera, which can scan the whole open flat in a handful of passes, and for the thermal camera where light is poor or the search is running into the evening, when a heat signature stands out clearly against cooling sand and marsh grass in a way it would not against warm ground in the middle of a summer afternoon.

In the old town itself the ground works against a foot search in a different way again: streets rise steeply from the quay, and the working shipyard further down the estuary at Appledore is a reminder that this is still a busy waterway with its own hazards. Landmarks that most people in the area already know, Bideford Quay, Bideford Long Bridge and Appledore, are useful shorthand when a search coordinator is relaying where the drone has already covered and where it is heading next.

Both cameras are recorded, not just streamed, so if a search runs across a falling or rising tide, footage from an earlier pass over ground that is now underwater can still be reviewed afterwards. That matters on an estuary like this one, where the ground itself is part of the timeline of the search, not just the backdrop to it.
