North Hill rises steeply right behind Minehead, and the ground up there is nothing like the flat fields further inland. Bracken, gorse and small combes cut across the slope, and the contour of the hill blocks sightlines the moment you're a few metres off any path. A ground team working that hillside on foot is slow by necessity: every combe has to be checked separately, every gorse patch walked around rather than seen into, and the steepness itself makes the work exhausting within the first half hour.

From the air that same ground is covered in flight lines rather than on foot. The visual camera picks out colour and shape against the bracken in daylight, while the thermal camera reads a heat difference that bracken and gorse don't hide the way they hide a person from a walker at ground level. A search coordinator watching the feed can direct which combe or spur to check next, rather than sending a team blind up the whole hillside.

North Hill shelters the town from south-westerly weather but leaves it fully open to wind coming straight off the Bristol Channel, and the hill itself throws up downdraughts and eddies close to its own slope. That matters for planning a flight over the hillside: the safe line isn't always the shortest one, and a pilot who knows the ground plans around where the hill is likely to be roughest rather than finding out mid-flight.

Down at the harbour and quay the picture changes again. A person missing near the water's edge at dusk is a different problem to one lost on the hill, and low light is when eyesight fails first for anyone searching on foot along steps or a sea wall. The thermal camera keeps working after the light has gone, giving a coordinator a view of the shoreline without putting a ground team onto wet stone in the dark.

Minehead sits right on the edge of Exmoor National Park, with the West Somerset Railway line running along the lower ground, and both make useful reference points when a coordinator or a family is trying to describe a search area over the phone rather than on a map spread across a bonnet. A flight sector can be set against the park boundary or the railway line, and the live feed shown on a screen lets someone unfamiliar with the exact ground still follow where the coverage has been.

The hill also carries livestock straying down from the open commons above the town, through gaps in fencing that separate moorland from the fields at Minehead's edge. Walking every one of those fields and the open hill above them takes hours; a flight over the same ground, checking hedgerows and hollows for animals grouped together, takes a fraction of the time and leaves a farmer with a clear picture of where to look next.
