Ivybridge is unusual among Devon's moor-edge towns because the drop is visible in the town itself. Dartmoor falls away steeply on its southern side here, sharply enough that the streets nearest the moor sit noticeably higher than the streets down by the Erme. That drop doesn't stop at the edge of town: it carries on past the last houses and down into the wooded valley the river has cut on its way south towards the coast.

The Erme itself, and the viaduct that carries the old railway line high above it, both sit in a landscape that changes character over a short distance: open moorland grass at the top, then steep, tree-covered valley sides, then the river at the bottom. Each of those is a different kind of ground to search, and each one hides a person differently.

A person who has gone missing near Ivybridge could be on open moor above the town, on the exposed shoulder where the moor starts to tip downward, or down among trees on the valley floor, and there's often no way to know which until the ground has been checked. A team on foot has to change its whole approach partway through, from walking wide, open grass to picking a way through steep, wooded slopes. An aerial pass covers the same ground as one continuous strip, regardless of what's changing underfoot.

The Two Moors Way runs straight through this area, and a lot of the calls from ground like this involve someone who set out on a long walk and didn't reappear on schedule, rather than someone in obvious difficulty from the start. That makes the search area long and thin rather than a tight circle, running the length of a route rather than out from a single last-seen point, which suits an aerial search able to cover a corridor of ground quickly.

The moor edge position also means Ivybridge takes strong, gusting wind funnelled straight down the Erme valley, on top of rainfall that is already high this close to Dartmoor. A search timed for first light or for the hour before dusk has to weigh that wind against the advantage of low, flat light picking out detail on open moorland grass, and the flight plan is built around whichever the day is actually giving rather than a fixed routine.

The viaduct is the clearest single landmark for miles and works well as a fixed point to organise a search around, whichever side of the valley is being covered. From there, the Erme valley gives a natural line to follow both up towards the open moor and down towards the coast, and knowing roughly how far along that line a person was last seen usually narrows things down faster than trying to work out where on the hillside above or below they might have gone.
