Streets that turn into stairs
Dartmouth sits on the west bank of the Dart on ground steep enough that a fair few of its streets are effectively flights of steps rather than roads, stacked up above the water towards the castle and the river mouth. That layout makes a ground search slower than the map alone would suggest, since access, sightlines and even radio contact can change completely from one street to the next, and there is rarely a single vantage point that takes in more than a narrow slice of the town at once. What looks like a short walk on paper can mean several flights of steps and a detour round a building that a drone simply flies straight over.
Flown from above, the steep stack of streets, gardens and rooftops between the town and the river becomes one continuous view rather than a set of blind corners, which matters most when a search needs to cover a wide area quickly rather than work it out street by street on foot. A visual camera picks out detail across gardens, yards and the steeper ground above the town that is awkward, and at times unsafe, to reach on foot at all.
A search timed against the tide
The River Dart dominates any search around the town, and the state of the tide changes what is actually there to look at: mudflats and foreshore that are walkable at low water disappear completely at high tide, while the same stretch of river can go from slack water to a strong flow within a few hours. A search along the river margins, Bayards Cove or the water below the castle has to be timed against that change, since ground checked at one state of tide can look completely different two hours later, once the water has moved back in.
Thermal imaging is particularly useful here once the light goes, since a heat signature stands out against cool mud or water in a way that is very hard to pick out by eye from the bank or from a boat out on the river. Estuary search work of this kind is planned around both the tide table and the fading light, not around a fixed time of day chosen in advance.
Working with the river and the harbour
Dartmouth is a working port as well as a town, with the naval college and river traffic both part of the picture, so any search flight here is planned with an awareness of what else is moving on and around the water at the time. Coverage typically works outward from the town itself along both banks and out towards the river mouth, following whichever line the search coordinator has prioritised for that day.
As with the rest of the network, footage and thermal detections are passed directly to the police or coastguard rather than acted on independently, with the drone's job simply being to get a clear view of ground and water that is hard to see properly from either the steep streets above or a boat down on the river itself.
